Legalize Polygamy

Recently in many Western liberal democracies, the definition of marriage has been changed to include gay and lesbian marriages. Of course, I believe in their civil union rights, but the issue at hand is whether we should amend the definition of marriage. Since the number of gay couples has risen in many societies, and since it has become more and more accepted by societies, many governments have felt that they should change what they call marriage.

Western democracy is about equality of the law and equal benefit and protection of the law; therefore if the definition of marriage is going to be changed, we must apply this law equally.

I then propose that if you support changing marriage for gays you must change it for polygamy and later down the line you must change it for bestiality as well.

Polygamists have rights too, so why are they being discriminated against? Some argue that Polygamists are crazy fanatics unfit to be parents. Well then what about drug users, alcoholics, violent or dangerous people? They are not denied marriage rights and no one is suggesting that the state dictate who is fit or unfit to be married.

Some argue that Polygamy can cause confusion among their children. 2 dads or 2 moms, step parents, godparents, half brothers, half sisters. Let's face it, society as a nuclear family is over. No one is suggesting that we ban divorce or same sex marriage to avoid confusion.

Some people will argue that there are too few polygamists to facilitate the need to grant them marriage. Has anyone ever been to Utah, Nevada or Colorado? And so would you then say that once they grow in sizes we will then grant them marriage rights?

I am obviously not throwing out my endorsement for polygamy. Marriage is a sacred convenant between a man and a woman. And if we believe in progessive liberal ideals, it is hypocritical to support changing the defintion of marriage for one group of people and not the other.
